Cheese Scones
One of our most popular cabinet items are our Cheese Scones.
We are often asked what makes them so delicious? The answer is simple, they are made fresh every morning in our kitchen, in the old-fashioned way and use Origin Earth cheese and milk. So, for those who would like to make our scones at home here is the recipe.
Remember, the Origin Earth milk and cheese – the secret ingredients – are available from The Origin Earth Cheese Counter located within Chalk ‘n’ Cheese Café. And, if you just want to enjoy them without any work come visit us. Or buy the cheeses online.
450 g Baker’s flour
4 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp salt
75 g salted butter, grated
1 cup grated Origin Earth grated cheese (Takenga Gold for subtle cheesiness or Sleeping Giant for a great cheesy hit), plus extra for sprinkling
1-1½ cups Origin Earth full milk, plus extra for brushing
Preheat oven to 190°C.
Place flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl and mix well to combine.
Stir in butter and 1 cup grated cheese. Mix to combine. Add 1 cup milk and cut in with a knife, adding more milk to form a soft dough.
Turn dough onto a floured surface, lightly knead and shape into a 3cm thick rectangle. Cut into equal sized pieces and place 2cm apart on a lightly floured baking tray. Brush top of scones with a little additional milk and sprinkle with additional grated cheese.
Bake for 15 minutes or until golden. Delicious eaten warm.
Makes 12-15.
