Hawkes Bay’s boutique dairy company, Origin Earth, has taken out major prizes at the 2016 Champions of Cheese Awards ceremony, held in Auckland last night. (Tues 1 march).
The awards are to honour the technical excellence in the manufacture of NZ cheese and ultimately to drive consumption of NZ specialist cheeses by raising awareness, encouraging people to taste, and to promote the use of NZ cheese.
This year there were over 450 cheeses entered.
Each class of cheese is judged in much the same way as wine in that there may be, for example, 10 gold medal cheddars. Each class however has a champion of cheese award.
Of 10 cheeses entered by Origin Earth every one attained a medal. Two cheeses, Origin Earth feta and Origin Earth smoked sheep cheese were awarded Champions of Cheese (best in class overall), making the medal haul 12 out of ten.
Other medals were three gold, three silver and four bronze.
Co-owner of the 5-year-old, Origin Earth, Joanie Williams said “That the awards are testimony to the whole team at Origin Earth and their dedication to turning quality cows’ and sheep milk into value added, quality dairy products.”
